Main Street Oakland County

John Bry is a nationally recognized leader in historic preservation–based economic development and community revitalization. He currently serves as the Administrator of Local Business Development and Program Coordinator for Main Street Oakland County, the nation’s only countywide Main Street program, where he has guided 29 downtown communities in generating more than $1 billion in investment, launching over 1,300 new businesses, and creating more than 8,000 jobs.

With more than 30 years of experience, John has worked as a downtown manager, state coordinator, and consultant, providing technical assistance to over 100 communities in 15 states. He has secured more than $12 million in preservation and community development grants, saved historic landmarks, and fostered innovative projects that blend economic vitality with cultural heritage.

John’s passion for saving places began early. At just 19, he founded the first countywide historic preservation organization in Ohio, and that passion has continued throughout his career—from serving as a state-appointed county historian in Indiana to championing adaptive reuse projects that have transformed schools, hotels, and parks into community assets.

In 2023, John was elected to the National Main Street Leadership Council and honored with the prestigious Mary Means Excellence in Leadership Award, the highest distinction in his field of downtown revitalization.

Beyond his professional achievements, John is deeply rooted in community service, lending his expertise and time to historic cemeteries, heritage festivals, and preservation organizations.
