Millie Murphree, PhD, is the County Extension Coordinator for Escambia County, Alabama. Her job responsibilities include community workforce, leadership and economic development as well as local programming. She leads beekeeping programs, the 4-H rabbit club, and the Master Gardener program in her county. She serves as the Kiwanis Club President and is on other boards like Smart Growth, Arts Council, Tree Beautification, and the Escambia Career Readiness Center. Millie is a former schoolteacher where she taught middle school and high school English for thirteen years. She has a master’s degree in Secondary Education Language Arts, a master’s degree in Agricultural and Extension Education, and a doctoral degree in Agricultural Science. Millie has a love for teaching and a passion for agriculture. Millie’s Extension interests reach beyond Escambia County as she has travelled to New Zealand, Guatemala, and Uganda to conduct research and to teach different agricultural practices. Millie is committed to raising nutritional awareness through local food systems like school and community gardens. In her spare time, Millie likes to work in her backyard creating a habitat for birds and butterflies as well as planting fruits and vegetables.
