Restore the Canopy: Free Saplings Giveaway

The Town of Cicero is located directly south of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD). The MWRD has a program to give away free saplings called “Restore the Canopy.” We partnered with the MWRD to have one of our local schools be a pick-up point for these trees.

Cicero School District 99 gave away 99 trees in late September 2023. Planting and care instructions are included, as well as information on the importance of trees.   

The event was advertised on social media and through the school district, and also covered by a local news station.  The event was so successful that we plan on extending it to more school buildings throughout District 99 and making a huge push for Arbor Day. 

The MWRD covered all costs of the program and is eager to continue partnering with the Town of Cicero as their closest neighbor. Town officials are happy seeing these little trees planted throughout the town.
